why Queen of Tears (Kdrama) is a hit

Posts about Queen of Tears have been amassing my feed lately. It was highly anticipated because of its top-tier cast, Kim Soo-Hyun, Kim Ji-woon, and Park Sung-Hoon. And so, after our Korean trip, we finally jumped on the bandwagon.

Netflix

It’ll be extremely biased if this post most likely convinces you to watch this show. But yeah, I am biased 🙂 It already surpassed the ranking of another favorite of mine – Crash Landing on You, which, by the way, shares the same writer, Park Ji-Eun.

This series is relatable to me on many levels. We all wish we were chaebols like Hong Hae-in, but there’s one massive dilemma in the story: She is terminally ill. What would you do with all the money and fame if you have an incurable illness and have three months to live?

Having chronic illness is a major factor that some people may find it relatable. There was a dramatic scene when Hae-in was hallucinating in a superbly poignant setting. Plus a plot that’s not boring and the villains are really villainous, scheming their way to destroy the protagonist and her family.

We are still in episode 6, so there’s no spoiling here. But it’s more than enough for me to recommend this amazing K-drama.

New Favorite – Daily Dose of Sunshine (Kdrama)

This new series has become my instant favorite, depicting mental health with beautiful narration and emotions. Park Bo-young, as Jung Da-eun, is a passionate and emphatic nurse who just transferred to the psychiatric unit. An epic adaption of the webtoon “Jeongsinbyeongdongedo Achimi Wayo” (정신병동에도 아침이 와요) by Iraha (이라하).

This drama addresses the pressing issue of mental health, which not only is a great concern for South Korea but all over the world. In every episode, they feature a specific illness.

First episode (sorry, this may be a spoiler) talks about Bipolar Disorder. Patient Ri-Na is diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder manifesting symptoms including a sudden overflow of energy, a personality switch, unusual sexual behaviors, obsession, etc.

Coming from the perspective of the patient, we see mental illness in a new form. Opening doors for real-life struggles, problems, and challenges. Issues we try to avoid because of their heaviness and pain.

I look forward to the episode with depression, anticipating the portrayal of symptoms that may be relatable to what I have or may have experienced.

This series is really worth your precious time, we can all learn something from it, to help us understand the people affected with mental illness.

See You in My 19th Life (Korean Drama)

This is a beautiful love story! Adapted from the webtoon “See You in My 19th Life” (이번 생도 잘 부탁해) by Lee Hye (이혜). A tale about love that spans several lifetimes.

No spoiler here.

This newly released drama has exceptional cinematography and superb acting, particularly my favorite – Shin Hye Sun. It is slightly different from the webtoon but they created a wonderful fantasy tale about love and memories.

One of the elements I loved the most is the portrayal of the lead actress’s infallible, persistent, and unconditional love. While the male lead (Ahn Bo Hyun) struggles with past traumas and guilt. Their chemistry is just perfect!

The role and acting of her sister (Ha Yoon Kyung) is equally impressive, she is adorable and sweet.

I’m not done with the drama yet, still cherishing every episode…

Doctor Cha Drama

Coming from a medical background, this on-going Korean Drama is relatable in all levels. Now on Netflix, this new series is full of comedy & drama, depicts the sacrifices of a mother to her family. Starring Uhm Jung-hwa in the titular role, along with Kim Byung-chulMyung Se-bin, and Min Woo-hyuk.

It has been dominating the TV rankings since its released. According to Soompi, “Doctor Cha” took No. 1 on Good Data Corporation’s weekly list of the dramas that generated the most buzz.

The acting of Uhm Jung-hwa is notable and very good indeed, her character was a full-time housewife who after 20 years decided to go back to her medical practice. A kind of drama that keeps you sane in this crazy modern world. ❤

Tale of the Nine Tailed – KDrama

The Korean Drama we are currently watching, Tale of the Nine Tailed is a fantasy series starring Lee Dong-Wook, Jo Bo-ah, and Kim Bum.

Story evolves around the mythical nine tailed fox (Gumiho) and his goal to find his first love. Lee Yeon meets this woman who might be the reincarnation of his beloved.

I find this drama very entertaining, maybe scary for some as there will be ghosts, spirits and zombies in almost all episodes.

Acting is superb, conflict between siblings while fighting against evil is notable. The chemistry of the lead couple is perfect, portrays love even in pain, suffering and a very long period of waiting.

Season 2 is set to be released this year 2023 because of first season’s success. Indeed, this drama is a must-watch.

Fiery Priest K-Drama

Finishing my drama list, I came across this highest rated series in 2019 according to Nielsen Korea. Starring Kim Nam-gilKim Sung-kyunLee HaneeGo Jun, and Keum Sae-rok, this drama is a combination of crime and comedy. You will laugh non-stop.

Plot is simple, an ex-agent Kim Hae Il turned priest attempts to investigate the murder of Mosignor Lee Young-joon. A hilarious journey of taking down the culprits and corrupt officials is what follows. The anger issues of priest Kim Hae Il makes the series much funnier, every action scene turned into comedy plus the perfect mixing of crime and humor.

I have watched countless dramas and this is surely one of the best comedy and action series. Amazing and really satisfying to watch, no boring episodes.

Summer Strike K-Drama

Adapted from the webtoon “I Don’t Feel Like Doing Anything” (아무것도 하고 싶지 않아) by Joo Young Hyun (주영현). This new TV series is a melodrama set in a quaint seaside village of Angok.

Starring Kim Seol-hyun and Im Si-wan, this series gives a different vibe more like self-discovery, seeking peace of mind and one’s purpose.

Reading some comments over social media, one saying – “contrary to what I’ve heard about this drama being slow paced I found it to be perfect.”

With this K-drama expect less lovey-dovey between two main characters, touching more on healing from grief and trauma. Breaking away from the toxicity and stressful life in the city.

Watching this made me reflect even more and see myself with the main actor’s actions, decisions and passivity (politeness). A drama that shows real life, challenges, struggles and all…

Sharing this ending quote by Lee Yeo Reum – “I thought about what happiness is. I looked it up in the dictionary. Happiness is a state of bring pleased, fulfilled, and content in life. I found that definition to be too long, so I decided to make it shorter. Happiness. The state of being sufficient.”

Mr Queen KDrama

Long before posting drama reviews, my hubby and I finished this drama in Viu. It was released in 2020 and now available in more platforms like Netflix.

And no, this review doesn’t contain spoilers 🙂

This comedy series is one of my favorites, totally hilarious! My chuckles could be heard by my neighbors and you’ll surely laugh in every episode. My husband (aka my Kdrama buddy) love this series, too!

Mr. Queen contains 20 episodes with genre ranging from romantic comedy (rom-com), historical and fantasy. Story begins with a prestigious chef having an accident and his soul entering a 19th century queen’s body.

This is pure comedy and best to watch it with a partner so you’ll not laugh alone. You may find the plot simple but there’s exciting twist in each episode. You’ll also cry and feel sad for the charming characters of this drama.

You’ll love the characters here, mine ofcourse is the king and queen. Their acting is superb! Kim Jung Hyun (King) and Shin Hye Sun (Queen) have great chemistry. Their bond in the story is heartwarming and passionate.

And so I’ll leave the experience to my readers… Mr Queen is in my favorite list, you can tell how much I recommend you to watch it 😉

Alchemy of Souls: Light and Shadow

Season 2 of Alchemy of Souls dubbed as “Light and Shadow” premiered last December of 2022. At that time I was still finishing Dodo-Solsol-Lala-Sol also starring Lee Jae-Wook & I decided to wait for more episodes of season 2 to air.

According to Nielsen Koreathe season two premiere accumulated an average nationwide rating of 6.7%. A higher rating than that of season one, which premiered to a nationwide average of 5.2%. Season two episode two later received an even higher rating of 7.7 per cent, after it saw a substantial rise in viewership.

Alchemy of Souls – is one of the period pieces fused with fantasy and folklore. Many got captivated by season 1 as it ended with tragedy and mystery.

Season 1 / TVN

Like previous drama reviews, I avoid lengthy posts and prefer to point out the best in every series. I’m sure you’d agree, actors here have stunning visuals and exceptionally good-looking 😉

The genius of AOS is that they didn’t use actor heavyweights, the acclaimed writers – Hong sisters (Hong Jung-eun and Miran) presented a captivating storyline paired with carefully concocted visual effects to impress viewers worldwide.

Season 2 / TVN

Currently in episode 6 and I can’t help but to pity Yul again as another heartache is about to happen… 💔

Finished with this drama and ending is just superb! Happy ending for everyone.

사랑 💕
